New Physical Modeling Synth For iOS, Anckorage Spring

anckorage-spring-synthesizerReader Christophe Duquesne has released Anckorage Spring  –  a new physical modeling synth for IOS (iPhone,iPad and iPod).

Anckorage Spring is based on “the simulation of a set of connected mass- spring, integrating non-linearities, fluid and static friction, mechanical limits, gravity and bouncing.”

It is designed to be controlled by a continuous controller (like the Haken Continuum) but can be used with a regular keyboard or directly from the device screen or from other core MIDI apps. According to Duquesne, a continuous controller will provide a much more accurate control of the model.

The mains ideas behind Anckorage Spring are:

  • Being able to tweak real world parameter like Mass, Force, Gravity, etc. instead of tweaking usual electronic parameters,
  • Not only try to mimic real world, but also allow very “unusual” things like modulating a Mass and changing the Gravity,
  • Emphasis control and expression using the physical parameters,
  • Open a new world of sound to experiment with….

  1. Other than Impaktor, I have not found any other physical modeling synths for iOS. How nice that this is a free one!! (It’s unclear from the post above if this is a promotional offer or time-limited). I’m looking forward to trying it out! Will report back.

  2. Just tinkering with presets, sounds nice. I like the playing interface. Seems to quantize to pitches as you tap, but will bend pitch if you swipe. X axis is pitch, Y axis is volume.

    I’m happy to contribute to physical modeling on IOS.
    I have plenty of ideas to improve and extend the model: there will be updates and other apps … (I mailny need time…)

  4. Hi Christophe, I was going to email to thank you, but I’ll go ahead and express my gratitude here.

    The program is fascinating. I’ve enjoyed playing the presets. I read the manual last night. You did a fantastic job, both with the program and with explaining the parameters of the spring. I really appreciate that you have kept the model simple and “dangerous”. Some developers try to remove “risks”– i.e., try to make it so no settings will go silent; or prevent sounds from sustaining through preset changes. You have made it so that unusual and interesting things can happen!

    It sounds great! I’ll go give it a good rating right now.
