ZeRO SL MkII + Launchpad vs Ableton Live

This official Novation video demonstrates using the ZeRO SL MkII and Launchpad to control Ableton Live 8.

via NovationTV:

Launch clips with Launchpad and let ZeRO take control of the mixer and all Live’s devices, there are even 8 trigger pads on the ZeRO to sketch out drum beats. But the best thing about the Zero is that you will never lose track of what you’re controlling.

  1. Nice video!

This clearly demonstrates why I personally consider the launchpad not the best choice for stand alone usage as a controller (notice how he artist heavily uses the mkii where the right launchpad merely indicates the status). BUT at the same time also shows you that there probably isn't any other controller within this price range which is more versatile than the launchpad.

Right now I'm happy with my apc40 and mpd24. But should I ever want to expand on my controllers I'd be looking at the launchpad and ignore the apc20 completely.

As to the question above.. Considering we're talking Live here I wouldn't be surprised if this is a demo of some Max for Live patch. Novation has launched a stepsequences as a M4L patch, I doubt we're seeing it in action here, but I wouldn't be surprised if people used it as a foundation on which to extend.

Do not underestimate the power of Live nor the extensibility of Max 🙂 IMO that is the killer combo of the modern DAWs (yes, I'm biased).
