Where The Boys Aren’t – The Next Girl DJ Competition

Does the world need a all-girl DJ competition?

You might think so, if you look at the ranking of the top 100 djs in the world for 2009,. The list is completely dominated by men.

“I was really shocked to see so few female DJs featured in the annual Top 100 DJ chart in DJ Magazine this year,” said German  DJ, producer, and label owner Anja Schneider. “I think there were maybe 2 out of 100.”

Schneider is one of the judges of a new European-wide ladies-only DJ talent competition. Next Girl DJ hopes to encourage more females to get into DJing, a field they consider “a male dominated environment.”

The Next Girl DJ Contest

next-girl-dj-competitionThe competition opens Monday 22nd February 2010 and is open to any female DJ over the age of 16 from Europe.

Entrants are asked to upload their mix to nextgirldj.com to be voted on by a community of dance music lovers. The length of the mix should be around 30 minutes, but no restriction will be placed on the style of music.

Ladies’ Night For DJ’s?

In a way, it seems sexist to suggest that women need their own “softball league” to compete for recognition as DJs.

Realistically, though, you could look through the top 100 DJ list and struggle to find any female DJs.

What do you think about the idea of an all “girl” DJ contest? Do female DJs need a “ladies night”?
