Dr Peter Zinovieff On EMS, Working With Delia Derbyshire

This is just a teaser for the Red Bull interview with Dr Peter Zinovieff of EMS, but it did its job and left me wanting more.

In the excerpt, Zinovieff discusses working with Delia Derbyshire and talks about the early days of Electronic Music Studios, “the world’s longest established synthesizer manufacturer.”

  1. All I know is that you can get stuff from Buchla & Associates, and have been able to get stuff, more or less continuously, since 1963. There have been some periods where the wait was a little on the long side, granted. πŸ™‚

Still, people are waiting for the "new" Synthi for at least a decade, aren't they?

I agree that this will be an interesting interview, though.

  2. Are EMS really “the world’s longest established synthesizer manufacturer?”

I would guess that was Buchla & Associates.

  3. It might be a case of hair-splitting… counting Buchla & Associates as "consultants" for at least part of their life while tagging conditions like "continuous" onto the "manufacturer" part (with some slight of hand on just how "continuous" EMS operation has been), all buried in the fine print somewhere.

Chalk it up to marketing hyperbole and just ignore that bit, would be my suggestion…

Still going to be a fascinating interview when it comes out in full.

  6. Delia was this beautiful, tall black haired horny genie who swooped into my arms the first day of our arrival at the Dartington Summer School of Music just 50 years ago. I met her again at the
Radiophonic Workshop. And again, on the airwaves, enjoying the sounds her marvelous spirit concocted for the Dr. Who Series I watched in San Francisco. Alas, I would have wished to grow old together with her. Her death was an unfair blow to everyone who knew and loved her. So there I am. There you are. Hello, Peter. Hello Chris. If you wish to get in touch, I'm in the phone book in SF and will be back in June.
