Is This The Best Music Product Promotional Video Ever????

Musikmesse 2010: I’d like to thank Mark Mosher for sending this video for the Roland Lucina AX-09 keytar shoulder synthesizer my way.

I’ve seen some awesome music product promotional videos in my days, but this one is a class of its own.

What makes this Roland Lucina AX-09 promo video so unique?

  • Is it the fantastic script?
  • Is it the Kenny G style Bach covers?
  • Is it the Stepford Kids?
  • Or is it the narration that sounds suspiciously like it was generated with the latest text-to-speech vocal synthesis technology?

Give this video for the Lucina AX-09 keytar shoulder synthesizer a look, and you’ll understand why I’m thanking Mark right now. If I watch any more of it – I may have to go jump off of a bridge.

And remember – “Make sure that you don’t wear the strap on the wrong side.”

Does the Roland AX-09 video leave you shocked and awed? Leave a comment with your thoughts!

  1. I was stunned when I found this. At first I thought it was a joke. Then I realized – OMG – this is a real promo.

It makes me think someone at Roland watched DEVO's latest tongue-in-cheek marketing research videos and thought they were real and valid approaches for creating marketing materials. Here is one of my favs by the way http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FX4_DBaYzZU&fe

I think Roland has just beat out Microsoft Songsmith with this campaign.

By the way, I like how the Stepford wife shreds some prog rock near the end of the video.

  6. "I want to be able to play an instrument, and be able to experience a musical lifestyle." Yikes.

Why do I feel like I've just watched an airline safety video? In case of a bad keytar cover tune, will a little air mask pop out of the back of the Lucina AX-09?

  8. this is not a promo. its a 'quick' consolidation of the dvd 'instruction manual' that comes with it. i would rather pay to play a friends yamaha ax-7 than get one of these things for free. it look sub-par and the 'tones' are complete bs. if they are striving to sell to parents wanting to give the gift of music to their 7 year old for christmas this year because they never had an inkling of talent (more likely interest of lack of adhd) then they will win big time. as elisabeth in the post before me said –

  10. Best music promo vid ever? hmm, no. IMO this is more like a "portable keyboard for dummies" kind of video. Which IMO becomes quite clear when getting a little into this video; 150 different tones, that's all? With an estimated price of $700,- ? "But you can also put it on a table" ?

I'd label this under the "bad comedy" kind of video πŸ™‚

  12. To be honest I like the understated look of this one much better than the AX-synth, which to me looks goofy as hell. If the AX-9 were merely a keyboard controller, I might be interested. But I can't see paying extra money for a sound bank that I would never, never, ever use. Especially that Jazz Scat patch.

  14. High quality and highly expressive sounds…. Yeah… I love general midi sounds!
Now I can stop planning this stupid modular I had in mind…
    Just 700$?
I've been waiting for this my whole life!
    Let's start some JPop action!

  16. It's an amazing video! I like the fact that a whole video promotional team has been given "go" on this video. It's so unlikely and so "not" 2010. I like it! And instead of yet another lousy Roland shoulder synth I'll remember it as something warm and funny. Instead of trying to make it cool they're embracing it for what it really is.

  17. To be honest, I kinda like how it looks. If it was cheap, I might have considered picking one up as a midi controller for the hell of it.

But seriously, $700 for THAT? 150 patches? Is it just me, or are they all general midi?

Is Roland getting an early start on April Fools jokes?

  18. It's amazing…there is absolutely NO irony going on there. They really are serious. What is up with Roland? Are there markets for corny products like this in Asia? Will they ever come up with anything cool again?

  20. Yeah, when this first started rolling I was expecting the tongue-in-cheek that was shown in the receing Elektron videos. I also love the Waldorf marketing with evil villians. I agree, Roland is serious.

  22. This is Roland catering to the Worship crowd and soccer moms. All that's missing are some doves in the background. All Roland marketing material has been creatively blunt and inoffensive.

Roland, if you need some help next time (and clearly you will) – call me.
