Arcano Systems LLC is making a new chiptune synth, the Obscura 8-bit Chiptune Synth 2, available via a Kickstarter project.

The Obscura 8-bit Chiptune Synth 2 is a MIDI synthesizer that is designed to let you create music in the style of the classic video game themes of the 1980s.

The device is the successor to the Obscura MIDI 8-bit NES & C64 Chiptune Synthesizer, a project launched on Kickstarter in 2015.

No programming is required and there is no software to install. Simply connect a MIDI controller and play.

This monophonic music synthesizer features several improvements on the original including:

  • more waveforms
  • more patches
  • improved volume envelope system for reduced latency
  • greater vibrato depth
  • faster arpeggio frequency

Here is the official intro video:

The Obscura 8-bit Chiptune Synth 2, is available to backers, priced starting at US $80, via a Kickstarter project.

  1. So is it basically a rompler? I don’t see anything in terms of LFOs, ASDR, filter, etc…..

If so, seems pretty lame to me. Plogue Chipsounds already sounds fantastic with crazy amounts of control. I don’t see the point of buying hardware that can’t be manipulated.

Please correct me if I’m wrong……

  2. I’d really like to see a chiptunes synth with a decent interface and built in keys, editable arp, sequencer, multiple voices/sequence tracks. Bringing chip tunes into the physical world…. A chiptunes volca would make me very happy.
