Ableton Live 10, a major update to the popular DAW, is now available.
Live 10 features four new devices, workflow refinements and a redesigned sound library; new functionality and high-res visualizations for Push; and Max is now fully integrated into Live 10 Suite, delivering faster, more stable performance.
Here’s a hands-on demo of the biggest new features in Live 10, from Ableton Certified Trainer Serafin Sanchez:
New Instruments & Effects
- Wavetable is Ableton’s latest synth and offers a ‘vast sonic palette’.
- Echo produces delay sounds from classic textures to soundscapes, wailing feedback and experimental atmospheres.
- Drum Buss is capable of adding subtle character or ‘completely bending and breaking’ drums.
- Pedal brings the character of analog stomp boxes to Live, with separate circuit-level models of overdrive, distortion and fuzz guitar pedals.
Workflow Improvements
- Capture recalls an idea after it has been played and turns it into a MIDI clip with groove and feel intact.
- Multiple MIDI clip editing allows users to see the content of two or more clips in one detail view.
- Groups within groups allow for greater flexibility when mixing and improves Set organization even with lots of tracks and a detailed arrangement.
- Refinements to Arrangement View workflows, Browser Collections, I/O renaming, note chasing, and more.
Here’s a quick overview of the workflow improvements in Live 10:
Updated Sound Library
- Curated Collections capture the musical threads that tie together evolving styles and scenes
- Four all-new Essential Instruments include synths, and multi-sampled electric keys and drums
- Live 10’s Core Library has been updated with ‘richer, more detailed sounds’
Push Updates
- A new step sequencing layout allows simultaneous note sequencing and real time playing.
- MIDI note view allows navigation and refinement of the notes in a pattern in context directly on the Push display.
- Richer visualization with more feedback of key Live devices including Wavetable, Echo, EQ Eight and Compressor
- Workflow improvements to layouts, building and extending patterns, track arming and more
Max for Live
- Deeper integration with Live 10 Suite means devices now load faster, use less CPU and feel more like Live’s native devices.
- Sonically upgraded Drum Synths, improved modulation and mapping Devices and more
- Multi-channel audio routing means mixing using multi-channel speaker setups is now possible
- Max for Live devices can send and receive SysEx, allowing deeper access to external gear

Upgraded to 10. The biggies for me are Multi-Clip Editing (where up to 8 MIDI clips can be viewed simultaneously), Nested Group Tracks and MAX for Live being built into the suite version of Ableton Live 10.
and here the same the best new ableton features are always copied from fl studio 😛
Thanks Serafin for the great overview…logical, clear and getting me excited to create!!
Have they improved the sample editing workflow (natively in the app and also on the Push 2)? That’s my biggest frustration with it and why I’ve held off (so far) on pre-order upgrading to 10.
I’ve been using the Beta and Capture is a huge new feature.
As soon as you’ve tried it, you’re like ‘Duh – why hasn’t anybody done this before?”
Logic has had this feature for the 20 years that I’ve been using it!
Does look like there are some useful features in this update though.
Logic has had this feature for over a decade. Nevertheless, I’m thrilled that it has finally made its way to Ableton.

Capture is one of those features where once you use it you will wonder how you ever lived without it. Worth the price of admission alone.
i wonder why it took so long to copy these feature… its in fl studio since 7 years xD the same for multi midi edting…
Jimmi, seriously, we get it….
Yep Logic for, like, ever. Another thing Logic has that I have suggested to Abelton: split/demix by note event.
I remember using the “Extrapolate” feature in Cakewalk 1.0 like a thousand years ago. I’ve missed that in Live. But you can kind of do that with drum tracks though (which, honestly, is the only place I really need it): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DO5FjpcG0E
Does it finally offer resizable GUI?
Upgrade fee from Live Suite 9.7 to Live Suite 10 is “tiny” $420 AUD.
I think I pass on that one…
Which parts of the GUI?
I would struggle to get much work done if I kept as much booze on my desk as there is on that promo pic
Still no multichannel MIDI routing from plugins… cmon Ableton, fix the nuts and bolts first
Would be helpful if Ableton committed to a 4 years no upgrade cost plan for L10. If not, for suite users might a costly functional upgrade and for Standard/Into a costly cosmetic update 🙂
