Detroit techno legend Jeff Mills demonstrates how to play the Roland TR-909 as an instrument, in this performance from his project Exhibitionist 2.
From the project description:
“Jeff Mills goes even deeper into the art form to display, not only how he uniquely mixes music, but how he thinks in real time to create and work spontaneously like a musician playing a acoustic instrument or a soloist thinking of rhythms off-the-fly.
This ambitious project consists in capturing the DJ in multiple film recordings showing close- up and multi-angles that reveal exactly what a DJ does – how music is programmed and played for the purpose of dancing.”
Quality and style.
Excellent
I couldn’t care less about the TR-909, but this is a fantastic performance.
Artist with a big A! Thank you.
Certainly beyond techno
Can he do it with the TR-09?
I doubt that. Maybe with a TR-8
my back, knees, and ankles hurt watching him crouch like that for so long, but otherwise it feels so good
I love Jeff Mills, but this got a bit self-indulgent and boring after about 3 mins.
nah
its not much music without a bassline
I think I’ve seen this before because it’s on YouTube.
Amazing. One of those people that truly knows his craft on a very high level. Obviously this is not a whole track/set, but he clearly shows how effectively and efficiently he can program/interact on the fly and use this interface to control dynamics. Naysayers: Do better, and prove it. Cheers. 😉
