Reason ReCycle, ‘The Sample Tool That Refuses to Die’, Now Available As A Free Download

Free Music Software: Reason Studios has announced that ReCycle, ‘The Sample Tool That Refuses to Die’, is back, and available as a free download.

They’ve also announced a contest to raise awareness of ReCycle, ReCycle The Beat.

“When ReCycle was first released, it thrived in community-driven settings, empowering producers to share and innovate together.” says Calle Malmgren, CMO at Reason Studios. “With this re-release and the ‘ReCycle the Beat’-contest, we’re bringing it full circle – back to the community where it belongs.”

Here’s what they have to say about it:

“ReCycle, known for revolutionizing sample editing in the late 90s, is now offered to a new generation of music producers to preserve its legacy and provide a glimpse into the history of music production.

ReCycle introduced groundbreaking features that allowed manipulation of loops without affecting tempo, paving the way for new creative possibilities in electronic music. The sample tool quickly became a favorite among producers and played a significant role in the development of genres such as house, techno, and hip-hop.

In the latest patch – over 30 years after its original release, ReCycle seems to take aim at surviving another 30 as support for Windows on ARM and Apple Silicon is added along with general performance improvements.”

ReCycle Overview:

To celebrate ReCycle’s return, Reason Studios has also launched a beat battle contest, ReCycle the Beat. Participants are challenged to flip a given sample using any production methods.

The contest will be hosted by producer Don Cannon. Here’s the official intro:

“We’re thrilled to make ReCycle accessible to everyone. It’s a piece of music software history, and we believe it still has a lot to offer today’s creative minds,” notes Reason Studios CEO Niklas Agevik.

  1. ReCycle is amazing! I’m glad is won’t die. There is a hidden feature in the export that creates a S5000/S6000 program file (akp) and it exports the MIDI, and slices with it. All the basics of mapping the keys is done in the program. If you have old hardware Samplers it is a great inexpensive solution. Long Live ReCycle!

  2. I’ve been using this app since the day one many years ago – paid version at that time and it was then and still is indispensable part of my music production workflow.
BTW; Love the fact that among other improvements it is now AS native as well 🙂

  3. I still use it to this day. The REX export thing used to make importing beats to Logic EXS really easy, but Apple-being-Apple, they (oops) dumped the ability to import REX files when they updated Sampler (… aaaaand modernized the look while making it harder to use).
