The BOSS PX-1 Plugout FX features multiple effects, based on classic BOSS pedals, stereo input and output, MIDI control and more.

  3. As nice as this looks & sounds, the sour bit is that it comes with a 6 month free Roland Cloud subscription, enabling the same effects in your computer, with a few extras. So in 7 months you need to pay to access what you’ve already bought. Smart but exploitive move by Roland

    Would’ve been nicer to use the usb-c connection as a key to enable the effects as a vst & use a product registration system so the vst/cloud version can be used offline.

    1. What you said about Roland Cloud only applies if you want to use those same effects (and more) as a plug-in in your DAW. Those 16 effects that are in the pedal are yours to keep forever. Looks like each new effect that comes out you can add to the PX-1 via “Model Pass” for $10 USD each starting in January 2026. 8 of the effects are permanent and the other 8 are swappable via user slots. I wouldn’t be surprised if down the road you’ll be able to purchase a Lifetime Key for a number of the BOSS effects as a suite or individually. That’s their business model.

      1. The Eula needs to be checked to determine if when you sell the pedal you can transfer the purchased plug-ins to the buyer.

  4. This looks like a modern take on the Zoom MultiStomp series, which is kind of cool. And the effects sound great.

    I’d rather see somebody do a modern take on the Zoom CDR, though, with DAW-level effects and a better interface.

    For synthesists, the CDR is a pretty nice solution, but the quality of the effects is just nowhere near what’s available in any DAW or current effects pedals.

    My dream pedal would be if somebody like Sinevibes could partner with a hardware company and essentially do a Zoom CDR pedal, but with Sinevibes-level effects. The things that Sinevibes has done for the ‘logue series and their desktop effects are excellent and just completely blow away my CDR.

    Alternately, I’d love to see Korg bring back the Kaoss Pad line, with at least two effects engines and multi-engine support. The NTS-3 is too much of a toy for my taste. I’d want something built to the same standard as the Kaoss Pad 2 or 3.

  5. So, if I’m understanding this correctly, it’s just one effect or the other?
    You can’t chain them like you can with Zoom’s MS70 CDR.
    Also, you get 8 effects in the box. With another 8 being loadable via software. So 16 effects.
    If you want any more effects you have to purchase them for an, as of yet, undisclosed amount.

  6. Hey don’t disrespect my zoom cdr70, it can do 6 effects in series, (although no cute colors 😉 and make presets of those that are easily switched. It costed me less then a 100. It models some famous other expensive pedals YMMV.
    The apps cost .99cents and the new model has midi. Through some 3rd party website i got rid of all the ampsims and replaced them with effects from other zoom stompboxes that are more useable for me. never had to buy anything after the initial purchase. pretty happy with it 🙂

  10. these are going to be great once a community of hackers figures out how to hack the firmware to allow all of the effects and any future effects for free (like with the Zoom multi fx boxes). Ill grab one when it pops up in a pawn shop in 2 years

  12. I’ve had great results from Boss effects for years, so I’m slightly biased. Everything requires a cost/benefit analysis. You know where you are on your gear journey. You could save a little more and buy an Eventide device or something similarly upscale, but this is in the same ballpark as Zoom pedals. The pre-load pedals alone would cost you far more than $249 as hardware. I feel pretty sure a lot of people are creamin’ over it. I expect to see it sprouting from more rigs over time.

    1. If price/performance is an issue:
      Pick up a used Boss ME70 for ~$120 or less.

      Same types of effects, same modeling priciple – but you can actually use multiple effects at any given time and can switch presets. Very conveniently with plenty of footswitches, I might add.

  13. Surprised nobody is mentioning the Eventide H9. Similar approach it seems, but the H9 is quite a bit more expensive, depending on the configuration you buy. I would guess the H9 algorithms are a bit higher quality as well.

    Given the price on this, it should be a more viable option for some.

  15. As long as the functionality of the hardware depends on the willingness of the manufacturer to continue supporting it, or even allowing it to function, you own nothing. If their plan is for you to upgrade to new hardware at their whim, you will do that, or lose everything. Welcome to the future by permit.

  16. Subscription to Roland Cloud? I’ll Pass, I already have subscriptions for Adobe, Apple Music, Xbox, Netflix and Amazon. I gotz no money left!

  17. Stopped my Roland Cloud subscription and two of my Lifetime keys disappeared forever and they cannot fix it, they are gone. So i am never trusting them again. Only buying solid hardware that i can own forever.

  18. I have one Roland Cloud synth and I get good use from it. Its a keeper. Problem is, if I don’t use it for a few days, I have to visit their site and re-authorize it. Its a needless dance that keeps me from adding more. Its a “Lifetime” key. What do they think I’m going to do with it that makes them ride me like a pony to use it? Cherry Audio asks me for a sign-in from time to time, but its quite rare and reasonable. So far, I have one Roland and 6 from Cherry. Roland… how is it that a small company is beating the pants off of such a huge one? Lesson time.

    This is a lot of why I zero in on instruments that live on-board. When I’m in the zone, I have better things to do than get pooched by corporate cloud crap.

    aaargh, just give it wifi and ableton link, its 2025.
    im fed up with the midi clock and 5 pin cables.

    1. Yes – WiFi and Link should be de facto standards for any device that companies want to sell to electronic musicians.

      I feel like all new keyboards should be able to connect to the cloud, so you can download new presets packs, back up your synth, etc, without having to connect to your computer.

      And all sequencers should be able to sync via Link. I’ve found it to be tight enough that I don’t feel like I need to use wired MIDI for most situations.

      The main downside to adding WiFi to electronic music gears is that it could make you dependent on the company to maintain a service that could gimp your keyboard down the road. We have enough of that already, with synths like the M-Audio Venom, where patching is only really possible with the Venom app, and it’s no longer supported.
