Behringer Teases EMS VCS3 Matrix Synthesizer Copy For 9th Year

Behringer today shared this teaser image for the VCX3 – an unofficial copy of the classic Electronic Music Studios EMS VCS3.

The photo shows one of their ‘mad jet propulsion scientists’ with a set of VCX3 synths.

The EMS VCS 3 (Voltage Controlled Studio version 3) is a portable analog synthesizer, introduced in 1969 by Electronic Music Studios (EMS). While rare, the iconic instrument played an important role in ’70s music from Brian Eno, Jean-Michel Jarre, Klaus Schulze, Pink Floyd and others.

Behringer originally announced plans to make a VCS3 copy in 2017. They’ve shared multiple progress updates over the years, but have not announced when it will be released or pricing.

“This beast has taken far longer than expected,” the company notes, adding “We’re finally getting there!”

Features (subject to change):

  • Analog synthesizer with triple VCO design
  • Reproduction of original “VCS3” circuitry
  • Analog signal path with VCO, VCF and VCA
  • VCOs featuring multi-turn knobs for precise frequency control
  • Variable oscillator shapes with variable pulse widths
  • 24 dB low pass filter with resonance
  • 16 x 16 pin patch bay serves as signal routing matrix by inserting pins into holes
  • Ring modulator adds insane spice and edge to your sounds
  • Dedicated and fully analog triangle/square wave LFO
  • Noise generator dramatically expands waveform generation
  • Two-axis joystick serves as performance controller
  • 42 controls give you direct and real-time access to all important parameters
  • External audio inputs for processing external sound sources
  • MIDI implementation with MIDI channel and Voice Priority selection
  • 3-Year Warranty Program

Electronic Music Studios is still around, and bills itself as “The World’s Longest Established Synthesizer Manufacturer.” Original Synthi As & VCS3s are still in production, but they are priced at £5950, with a years-long waitlist – making them unobtanium for most electronic musicians.

  1. It will live or die based on how tough the pin patch bay is. Cross talk can make those a nightmare. If there’s a tougher modern version in play here, that will help. I wonder what people will use it for after they replicate “On The Run?” Its always been an effects generator, not a keyboard.

  2. It’s a shame they aren’t implementing a switch to alternate between the 18dB and 24dB filter models (and maybe take it a step further and add a 12dB option), but it’s otherwise looking great.
