New Korg MS-20 Filter Clone

Befaco has announced the BF 20V – a new clone of the Korg MS-20 filter for modular synths.

Two weeks ago, at our workshop in Barcelona, we started assembling the first units of our latest module: a very faithful replica of the legendary LP/HP filter of the MS 20.

The most demanding part of the design was reproducing the Korg 35, a dedicated IC found at the heart of the original filter. To be able to clone the filter, we first had to clone the IC! It consists of a mini PCB, so small we had to use SMD components for the first time (the people that attended our workshop had a blast! 😉 )

The clone of the chip is 100% compatible with the original filter, so it can be used as a part for repairing real MS-20?s!

  1. Im not a huge fan of software, so i might be wrong, but aren't there already 40 "100% faithful emulations of the MS-20 filter, developed in a secret lair by nobel prize winners we kidnapped from around the world"….

    Nothing's wrong with an original filter?

  2. Unless you know something I don't, you are mis-reading this post. I think this is a hardware replica. But its unclear how they got around patents. Perhaps those patents have expired? It sounds like their IC work might resurrect some old MS-20's with damaged ICs.

  3. ah, you're right, i misread it. I still apply the same sentiment to hardware clones of the MS-20 filter, it's been done to death.

    this looks like its banana jacks not 3.5 jacks from the pics on the site
    could be wrong but the stackable cables look too small for a 3.5 jack not that i care i have a frostwave!

  5. The nice thing about this product, as far as I can tell, is the replacement module for the original IC. So if your MS-20 breaks down you might be able to use this as a replacement. The problem of getting hold of old ICs to service vintage analog synths is not going to go away, so I welcome any and all endeavour that aim to create compatible replacements with modern parts for ICs that are no longer in production.
