The Yamaha DX line of synths is known for being the sound of the ’80s, expressive sounds, and patch programming that stretches the patience of most synthesists.

Developer Toon Beerten is trying to change that, with DX7 AI Studio, a free web app that lets you describe a sound in plain English (e.g. “warm glassy bell with a slow attack”) and it generates/edits a full Yamaha DX7-style FM synth patch for you. No operator/algorithm expertise is required.

Beerten say that his tool is aimed at letting FM1/DX7 owners create patches without needing to wade into 6-operator algorithm charts.

“It’s actually just fun!”, Beerten notes.
