The DigiEnsemble Berlin Performs ‘Word Up’

Sunday Synth Jam: When we last featured the DigiEnsemble Berlin, the were doing opera on iPhones.

The DigiEnsemble Berlin has serious goals – to systematically explore the capabilities of using mobile devices as instruments. Here, though, they let their hair down a bit, channelling Korn’s take on the Cameo classic, Word Up.

Here’s what organizer Matthias Krebs has to say about the performance:

We want to present a video that shows a piece of “Hard Rock” played on Apps like iShred (2), Drums XD, Basist and GarageBand (2). It’s just easy to play.

The performance took place at the LinuxNacht Europe’s largest conference and expo on open source and free software. Now we are looking forward to get some new instruments on linux soon 🙂

    1. The reaction of the crowd might have several reasons. One is the vevnue. If you walk into a club full of GNU/Linux enthusiasts (or even evangelists and zealots) with Apple devices running Apple software and proprietary applications you will not earn storms of applause. Or perhaps the people were not drunk enough to appreciate this kind of music …

    1. While unethical practices in employment in other countries is deplorable, using said actions taken in China, connecting them to a group of people in Berlin and calling it the next form of Hitler youth seems fairly fucking ridiculous, stop wasting our time. I have no idea what computer you’re using, but I’m pretty sure it didn’t come with a fair trade sticker.

  2. Interesting that everyone is criticizing this based on the instruments used, rather than the music.

This performance clearly intended to be provocative! If you can perform this type of music on cheap mobile devices, doesn’t performing the same music on thousands of dollars of gear become ‘doing it for show’?

    1. You can tell Halloween is near, because the trolls are out!

I would have liked the performance better if the vocalist had used a vocoder, like the original song. Not sure why they didn’t do that – there are some vocoders for iOS.
