Patterning Drum Machine App For iPad Now Available

Olympia Noise Co has released Patterning – a new drum machine for iPad that they describe as ‘as beautiful as it is powerful.

Here’s what they have to say about it:

Create dynamic drum patterns with the swipe of a finger. Make evolving, poly-metric rhythms, four-on-the-floor dance party jams, or laid back R&B grooves.

Use Patterning’s independent loop settings to explore untapped rhythmic possibilities. Automate parameters to create intricate & complex beats. Arrange patterns on the timeline to construct songs. Use the built-in effects–delay, reverb, distortion, and 3-band EQ–to add atmosphere, shimmer and noise.

Connect to other apps with Audiobus, Inter-App Audio, and MIDI.

Here’s a video preview:

Patterning comes loaded with classic drum machine samples as well as exclusive drum kits created and curated by contemporary producers and musicians. It’s also easy to create custom kits with your own samples.

  1. Oh my, looked so promising that I had to buy it. And with proper midi implementation – cannot wait hooking this up with my Rytm.

  2. I do not know about beauty with this. It resembles something from Star Trek:The Next Generation’s LCARS computer interface. It does look functional. I suppose if form follows function it has a sort of functional beauty.

  3. Polyrhythms and eulicidean grooves, sign me up. Also, the spectacular sync engine is supposed to be jitter free. Can’t wait to use this with my Rytm.

  4. Just wishing that I could set automation midi CC parameters myself, would rock with Rytm! And an in-built drum synth would be a cherry on top of a sequencer.

    1. I see the resemblance to the Buchla, however I think there is a more immediate resemblance to another iOS app called Loopseque. In fact, I’d call this Loopseque on steroids. It’s what I personally wanted Loopseque to evolve into. I connected with Patterning almost immediately. It’s an excellent tool to get something rhythmically interesting almost immediately, and I’m loving the MIDI capabilities…bravo to the developer for including this within an initial release! This might be the best drum machine available.

    2. Yea, I know about the Buchla module! Honestly though, I made the first prototype of this app around March 2013, and the Buchla 252 wasn’t around back then. So it actually isn’t based on that module. 🙂

    3. I have a Buchla 200e modular and I am glad that I can spend $9.99 and add a chunk of the 252e’s functionality for a small fraction of the price.

And the app does other stuff too…

  5. I’ve tried (and purchased…) nearly every drum machine app available. I connected with this immediately, in a way that I was unable to do with other drum machine apps. The UI is great! Yes it certainly is borrowing from the Buchla (a few others, including Eurorack mftrs have done this as well) – but great is great! and for those of you wondering – it does “swing”

  6. I’ve bought it, and tried it this morning. Very good. Its very intuitive, fun, and easy to learn. Its comprehensive and allows you to play with all aspects of the rhythms you are creating in a clear, logical and easy to use manner. I’d say this is better than most other drum apps. I have Nord Beat 2, iMaschine, DM1 and Funk Box. The Nord app is plagued by a bad interface – i like iMaschine, and DM1 and Funk Box are fun in a retro-70s way. But Patterning is way more creative than any of them. It operates in some respects like Propellerhead Figure, but just drums. I’d highly recommend it.
