Mutable Instruments Rings Into Clouds, A Classic Modular Combo

The latest video from The Unperson takes a deep look at classic Eurorack modular combo of patching the Mutable Instruments Rings module into the Mutable Instruments Clouds.

Rings is a resonator module, with some interesting tricks. Most notably, the resonator is ‘pingable’, is capable of physical modelling, and can be used as a polyphonic synth voice. Clouds module is a granular audio processor and texture synthesizer.

Both modules have been hugely popular with synthesists, because they introduced new capabilities to Eurorack. And, in combination, they make it possible for synthesists to create huge, spacious sounds using a minimal system:

The video discusses the Rings into Clouds combo, offers plenty of musical examples, and highlights why the two modules are still some of the most popular in Eurorack.

  1. Nice to see this word combo being explained to someone who’s not (deeply) into modular. It really is kinda like how the Chase Bliss Mood MK2 works for for those scewing around with desktop units. I am often so thoroughly dissapointed when I turn that thing of and hear what’s actually playing underneath all that atmosphere.

  2. ‘Rings into Clouds’ is like 15 minutes of fun, then it’s unmanagable nonsense from there on out.

so long Clouds! Beads is waaaaay better.
