AudioThing has introduced Fields, a new application that turns your iPhone into an “always-there” field recorder.
The app is designed to capture recordings directly on iPhone and iPad, while providing tools for organizing recordings, managing metadata, and exporting audio files.
Fields turns your iOS device into a audio field recorder for gathering source material that can later be used in music production, sound design, sampling, podcasting, and other audio projects.

This is way better than the voice notes app, obviously. What I would love to see / have though, is a multi-track version so I can super quickly add andditional ideas. I don’t care if it’s in-time or synced, just the ability to quickly capture ideas that are more complex (overlay) than one track would be killer.
Thats just another app. Probably exist already.

I’ve have been using Twisted Wave on various iOS/iPad devices to do field recordings, for years, going back at least to the iPhone 6. And attaching external mics for even better results.
I suppose I should be glad that there is a new alternative in town, but really…

I think Audiothing’s $7.99 app needs to be compared to the $5.99 FIELD (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/field-field-recorder/id6760171759), which I believe is the product to beat:
– 24-bit / 96 kHz recording
– WAV, AIFF, FLAC, and AAC formats
– Live monitoring through headphones
– On-device sound identification (birds, wind, traffic, voices, etc.)
– On-device transcription in 20+ languages
– Geotagging and weather metadata
– Bookmarking during long recordings
– iCloud sync
– Reaper project export for audio editing workflows
– Privacy-first design with local processing rather than cloud processing
The developer for this app has stated that he wasn’t looking at or competing with existing field recording apps but rather made the field recorder that he himself wanted to use.
In terms of workflow speed and specs ‘Fields’ is my #1 by far. God is absolutely in the UI nuances.

Utter nonsense. iPhone already has a built in “Always There” audio recorder.
Tell me you’ve never done field recording without telling me you’ve never done field recording….
Audioshare has been my go to for virtually all of this since the iphone 4 (damn I’m old).
