Beatport has announced that it’s banning AI-generated music, by expanding its partnership with music fraud detection specialist Beatdapp.
Under Beatport’s updated Content Guidelines, fully or majority AI-generated tracks will not be permitted on the platform. They will instead be withheld during ingestion, with rights holders notified directly.
Music created with AI assistance will still be accepted, provided the finished track remains majority human-made. These releases will be tagged during ingestion, giving Beatport’s curation team a clearer picture of what it is reviewing and featuring.
Beatport says that the policy reflects the feelings of Beatport’s DJ community.
According to a recent user survey:
- 60% said they would not play AI-generated tracks in their sets.
- 77% cited a firm preference for supporting human creators.
- Just 8% said they were currently open to playing AI-generated music.
- A further 13% would consider it if artists and labels were fairly compensated.
Speaking on this expanded partnership, Beatport CEO Matt Gralen said:
“Beatport exists to serve DJs and empower artists & labels,” said CEO Matt Gralen.
“While new production techniques have driven electronic music forward since the beginning, there is a difference between a tool that assists human creation, and a system that replaces it entirely. Beatport is built on the former.”

I’m planning a project using AI – key word being “using.” Mainly, I’m going to use to help me compose the music in the form of MIDI tracks. I take over from there including all of the post initial composing myself: synthesis, mixing, etc. I’ll let my ears do the judging throughout the whole process.

I’m against AI-made music.
But if AI learns from existing music, how is that fundamentally different from using templates, presets, MIDI generators, sample packs, or recycled samples all built from existing musical ideas?
Where exactly do you draw the line?
I think there is a big enough list of differences between the examples you gave and AI generated music for people to be able to hear the difference and for art/earth to be able to experience the difference in the long run. The line being our environment, and our humanity – its sappy but I think it’s pretty real unfortunately.
It raises the question what “AI-assisted” exactly means. What if you show your finished track to ChatGPT and ask for mix feedback? Or if you let it list you reference songs to help you get an idea for a bass line or let it suggest a scale to achieve a certain mood? Or if your DAW or plugin uses AI without you even noticing? I think we’re getting to a point where virtually all conventional music is “AI assisted” to a certrain degree, and it’s a good take to make a distinction to fully AI-generated content instead of banning it altogether.

AI doesn’t produce art, it produces output. The only people who use AI to generate output and call it art don’t have creative hearts, and are too unimaginative and too boring to make anything meaningful even before having access to the technology. It’s like microwaving a readymeal and expecting praise for being a good cook.
If you need AI to create music for you – whether because you have no skills or are just too lazy – then maybe you should find another hobby/career. I think I speak for most musicians/producers when I say we create music because we love to do it. No one asked for AI to take over all of our fun, creative endeavors. We asked that it take over all the tedious, boring tasks that detract time away from doing those fun, creative things. Shit like Suno have it all backwards and I hope they all go bankrupt.

So Puff Daddy can sample a whole record and that’s ok but there is some arbitrarily chosen limit to how much you can use AI. If there is a human applying their taste to HOWEVER they create their music it’s good enough for me. This is some serious BS. Lets ban Beach Boy records because Brian Wilson used Session musicians…

Song gets millions of downloads… it’s a fun memorable song albeit nothing really special because it can never have the personal touch, the what the hell have these musicians come up with. What made them come together. I want to know more about them and see them live.
