This MIDI DIY project looks at making a MIDI glockenspiel, aka Quasimodo’s Revenge The idea was to take a child’s toy xylophone and get the computer to play it. Now I know that the computer is capable of making noises electronically but it is much more interesting to watch an instrument being automatically played. I… Read More MIDI Glockenspiel Plays Philip Glass
This is a video demo of the Future Sound Systems Decade Counter DC1: The module sequentially counts through ten outputs (this can be cut down by patching a step output to the reset input), which can then be used to trigger envelopes, etc. in a modular system. Here, the module is used to process audio… Read More Future Sound Systems Decade Counter Synth Module
This is a video demo of the Formant Synthesizer, a synth DIY project published in Elektor magazine between 1977-1979. It was the first mini analogue synthesizer around with modular construction that could be built at home at an affordable price. A tribute article appears in Elektor, April 2008. via Elektor
Livid has put together a couple of cool videos demoing AudioCube basics: Percussa Cubes Basics Impressions and demonstration of using the Percussa Audio cubes with the tutorial Ableton Live set. The center cube detects the faces of the other cubes to send MIDI notes to Live to change loops. Percussa Cubes with Resonant Synth Here’s… Read More Percussa AudioCubes Basics
At the 2008 Maker Faire, IEEE Spectrum caught up with Andrew Turley, who had turned a microfiche into a musical instrument. Using a simple photodiode, the keyboard plays notes based on how light the center of the screen is.
Limor Fried, aka LadyAda, has introduced Wave Shield, a way to add audio output to Arduino projects: Adding quality audio to an electronic project is surprisingly difficult. People tend to end up either using low-quality ISD chips (you might get 8Khz sampling rate for 30seconds out of these, if you’re lucky!) or mucking around with… Read More Wave Shield Adds Music To Arduino Projects
Yamaha’s Tenori-On is getting a prominent introduction with Björk’s latest tour. The new controller/synthesizer is part of the rig of Damian Taylor, above, who uses the Tenori-On on the track Who Is It?. “Björk felt it would be cool to feature the gear,” says Taylor, “ to make it part of the stage set rather… Read More Tenori-on Joins Björk’s Band
A little modular synth porn flic demonstrating the polyphonic “switch on time” feature of the Moon Modular M563: People asking: “What is SWITCH ON TIME”? at the M563 trigger sequencer. With SOT you can define and optimize the width of your trigger/gate output signal. There are more creative possibilities: e.g. the SOT function manipulates the envelope… Read More Moon Modular Switch On Time Action
The !Malfunctionator is a DIY synth project, designed to be “a handy UFO dector doubling up as a Electro Music Device.” It consists of 3 oscillators, each modulated by 3 low frequency oscillators. The oscillators are based around the hex invertor IC known as CD40106 aka 7HC04; the wave froms produced from this logic device… Read More Synth DIY Project – The !Malfunctionator
First videos of the Chimera Synthesis BC16 miniature synth in action. The bC16 miniature patch synthesizer wraps up a VCO, LFO, 24dB VCF, VCA, envelope generator, noise source, ring modulator and headphone amplifier all in a round, white acrylic housing the same diameter as compact disc. Powered by six AAA batteries, the bC16 can be… Read More Midget Synth Porn Video
