Dave Smith put together this nice intro to the new Dave Smith Instruments Tetra synthesizer:

Tetra takes the award-winning sound and features of Mopho, multiplies them by four, and packs them in a box less than half an inch larger.

Tetra has multiple personalities. It is a four-voice, analog poly synth, a sort of mini Prophet. It’s a four-part, multitimbral synth with separate outputs, essentially four Mophos in one very compact box. And its a voice expander for other Tetras or the Prophet 08.

The DSI Tetra retails for $799. See our DSI Tetra synth coverage for details.

Now THERE's a man who genuinely loves his job. Wish we could all be so lucky.

I love that, in a climate where real analog equipment is a niche market, Dave Smith is doing his best to make high-quality synths without boutique prices. The routing capabilities of the Mopho and Tetra are really impressive.

Yes – DSI is making real synths that are powerful, sound great and are fairly priced.

This is a great synthesizer at a logical price, but, without a proper vst editor all these routings and features are wasted inside its cycling and boring parameter menu…the interface is nice but not as quick and flexible as a matrix interface (like Blofeld's). Many people have send emails to Soundtower and DSI, asking some info on the progress of the vst editor, but the companies found right to not respond to anyone…this is a shame for these products.

That's nice Dave, but when do we get that drum machine?

      something to think about

I’ve been telling synthesizer manufacturers for years that the issue is not increasing the number of internal options. The issue is increasing rapport, making a thing that relates to you physically in a better way. Of course the easy course is to add options, since absolutely no conceptual rethink is required. But the relationship between user and machine might be better achieved by reducing options. — Brian Eno
