Here’s What’s Planned For The Future Of Audulus

audulus+audiobusDeveloper Taylor Holliday has released a roadmap for the development of his Audulus modular audio environment.

Plans include 64-bit Audio Unit for compatibility with the new Logic Pro X, an improved audio engine for better performance, new filter types and a granular sampler node.

Here’s what he’s got planned for Audulus for iPad and Audulus for OS X:

  • 64-bit Audio Unit for compatibility with Logic Pro X
  • New Audio Engine with the following benefits: (NOW IN BETA TESTING!)
    • Improved performance (lower CPU load so you can build bigger patches)
    • No extra overhead for Sub-Patches
    • Single-sample feedback (eventually)
    • Increased voice counts.
  • Filter Pack – Beefs up the filter node with several new filter types!
  • Improved Knob UI – Better integration of the context menu with the knobs so you don’t accidentally bring it up when you meant to turn the knob.
  • Knobs (and other UI) on sub-patches. IN PROGRESS! – Makes your sub-patches appear more like built in nodes!
  • Granular sampler node – Load your own samples and play them polyphonically.
  • Full feature parity with the Mac version. (Sample Node, presets)
  • Better indication of the units for knobs.
  • Audio Copy/Paste support
  • Improvements to the on-screen keyboard
  • iCloud support

If you’re an Audulus user, let us know what you think of it – and Holliday’s plans for future development!

  1. Whatever the future holds for Audulus , I know it will be amazing. Audulus is one of the most powerful creation tools on both IOS and OSX. Keep up the good work Taylor we love everything you do.

  2. Audulus is truly one of the most unique and innovative music apps out there. The possibilities of what you can do are endless. Recommend to everyone.

  3. Hell yea, Audulus is already remarkable in how large the node graphs can get and still maintain low latency and slick UI smoothness, can’t wait to see what the new Audio Engine will allow!

  4. Taylor is doing awesome things with Audulus.

I’d like to see an option to use the iPad version to control the AU, so you could capture gestures while recording.

    1. Hey Kelly, that’s an excellent idea :-). Tricky to implement, but it would be super cool! It dovetails with another feature I want to do down the road, so keep an eye out.

      cheers

      1. That’s awesome! I’m going to be looking for that in an update now.

Thanks for the regular updates and tutorials, too. Some day I’ll get the math node figured out….

  5. Can Audulus do audiorate modulation? Are you planning on adding FM to the VCOs? Any “Source of Uncertainty” or “Noisering” type modules planned? We need a Modular G3 man! (starts wildly scratching)

    1. Hey Dylan, indeed, I want Audulus to be that G3! 🙂 Most of the modules support audio-rate modulation — so you could build FM by having one Osc modulate the pitch of another. I’m not super familiar with the Source of Uncertainty or the Noisering (had to google them), but Audulus has Random, Noise, and S & H modules out of which you might be able to build either. With the “Knobs on Sub-Patches” feature, users will be able to build new modules that look/feel like the built-in ones, so we’ll be able to approach the UI of bigger modules as well 🙂

      cheers

      1. Cool! “FM” I guess quite literally means frequency modulation, but I meant more in the traditionally implemented sense of modulating the harmonics instead of the root frequency by X or % the waveform and VCAing it’s amplitude to both + and – sides without either + or – side’s modulation crossing into 0 threshold thus changing the root frequency.

  6. Are there any good audulus tutorials anywhere? I love the concept and the sound of it, but haven’t figured out how to program the first sound on it.

  7. as far as Source of Uncertainty or the Noisering , the math nodes should be able to create the various random distribution ….how, no clue, but analog synth are just analog computers….. are there probibilties function in the math node…that would help too…I think.

Been a analog modular user for 20 years….great to see it returning in both hardware and software.
audulus is on the short list of ios apps Im interested in…..
please keep up the hard work.
