In his latest video, synthesist Matt Johnson is joined by Native Instruments founder Stephan Schmitt to talk about his unique hardware synth design, the Nonlinear Labs C15.
The C15 is a polyphonic instrument with a digital sound synthesis architecture. The goal of the audio engine is not to model analog machines of the past or to play back samples or complex waveforms, but to focus on creating sounds that can be dramatically influenced by how you play.
Details on the C15 are available at the Nonlinear Labs site.
Matt always sounds great. This product seems to have come a long way compared to when it was announced several years ago. Some of the timbres remind me a lot of the Osmose, but one key difference is that you can dig in and explore the full engine from the interface, whereas the Osmose requires a computer for deep programming.
Matt sounds good on everything but this really gives him some cool variance and expression to work with! Really cool sounds too.
I’ve always had trouble wrapping my brain around the C15. The control and patch editing seem very menu-driven, but many of the demos I’ve seen sound really amazing.
not at all, you have a dedicated button for almost every parameter so it’s more like pressing a button and twisting one knob.
When I win the lottery, I will buy one.
It just sounds like an FM synth, but has nice hardware and aftertouch. I’ll stick to my reface DX.
