Shut Up And Play: Sounds Of The Behringer BX1 FM Synthesizer

Here’s a shut up and play style demo of the new Behringer BX1 FM synthesizer, introduced at the 2025 NAMM Show, held Jan 21–25 in Anaheim, CA.

The video captures Jim Heywood testing out the Behringer BX1 on the show floor:

The Behringer BX1 is a new keyboard synthesizer that copies the Yamaha DX1 synthesizer from the ’80s. Official details for the BX1 are still to come.

  1. Apparently FX section is not available yet, so what we hear is dry sound.
Sounds pretty good as is, but…
I still think that Yamaha SY 77, 99 series offer much more in scope of sound.
Somehow marriage of DX architecture and digital waves sounds more appealing to me 😉

    1. That’s why it’s really a new instrument.

I wonder if B (or others) have considered cloning/reviving E-mu, Roland L/A, Ensoniq, or other digital-into-analog designs?

    1. Also discontinued about half a decade ago and not a great comparison because sequencers. If anything the comparison would be vs Hydrasynth, Opsix or MiniFreak.

  2. Who has got the space for this thing?

EssenceFM is my FM synth of choice these days; it replaced my TX802.

The touch screen and flexible envelopes makes it a programming FM more intuitive.

    1. I liked EssenceFM a lot, but then was like why not just use a tablet and I switched to Bitwig and iPad.

  3. Thanks for your opinion of my opinion. Digitone 1 (keys) Sound engine alone is a gazillion times more accessible, practical and usable than how this comes off. Nobody even knows what the DX1 was or cared except for probably 1,000 people in the world. And it’s insulting to even imply the DNA of the CS80 is inside. But cool. What do I know
    .

    1. if it was, they wouldnt. For a B product there could be repetitive and unproductive comments. It isnt a forum and they might not have a lot of staff to do the moderating. I dont mind a delay if it keep everything civilised.

      1. it’s only used for personal comments…. so, all those B comments? let ’em through! lol seriously, read just 40 comments a day? nice work if you can get it.
