Behringer today introduced that they are shipping the WASP VCF, a copy of the original Wasp filter in Eurorack format.
Here’s what they have to say about it:
“The Behringer WASP VCF is an authentic reproduction of the original ‘Wasp Deluxe’ filter from the ‘70s.
In fact, we’ve released the full-sized WASP DELUXE a few years back, but this time, we wanted to give you the same capabilities in a compact and easy to install module.”
Note: Some readers have pointed out that this appears to be an officially branded knockoff of the Doepfer Wasp Filter Eurorack module. Which is getting convoluted.
Features:
- Reproduction of the original “Wasp Deluxe” filter from the 70s
- Analog signal path based on VCF design
- Multi-mode VCF with Low, High and Band Pass modes
- Eurorack specs: 8 HP, 30 mA +12 V, 10 mA -12 V
Here’s the official video intro:
Pricing and Availability:
The Behringer Wasp Filter is now shipping from their factory, priced at $49 USD.
It is worth mentioning that the front panel controls and jacks are a 1:1 copy of the Doepfer A-124 Wasp filter. IDK if it is a clone of that module from a circuitry standpoint. The graphic on the face plate linking the resonance control to the BP output is a bizarre error.
Oh nice, a 1:1 of the doepfer version. I don’t see any point in buying this when the doepfer one is not much more expensive (particularly if you are in the EU), and you get to support a great company that set the standards for eurorack and continues to foster the synth community. Ok bye!
i’m calling my eurorack filter support genius bar guy today! lol.
lol!
Hell yeah, I love this filter. I hope they make an ms-20 / k2 one as well.
Yes! we need the ms20 and at the same price
The line from the resonance knob to the bandpass out is just classic Behringer eurorack design.
These guys can’t do anything themselves it boggles the mind. Are they afraid? Or just that unoriginal. Meanwhile isn’t the doepfer wasp super cheap anyway?
What a total contradiction lol
who cares? Most bakers also didn’t invent the recipe for the bread, which they are baking and selling everyday…
They labeled themselves as a “Market Follower”. Seems like they’re sticking to it.
It’s Shanzhai. Chinese copycat culture.
This dude 🙂
It’s not at all a port of their wasp deluxe it’s a total rip of doepfers design. The shameless part is not the cloning of a circuit but not just simply admitting “hey we reverse engineered doepfers wasp filter and are going to reproduce their exact circuit” and sell it. Just be honest and this is why they are not ethical so don’t respond incredulously “what do you mean by they are not ethical?” Next time it’s brought up.
Who cares? It’s cheaper. Where is your anger about all the other cloned everyday items you have lying around the house? What is it with music equipment that makes everyone so arrogant? lol
“Who cares, it’s cheaper” does not justify ripping off hundreds of products, especially those made by tiny trailblazers like Doepfer.
Yours is an arrogant and short-sighted perspective on globalization.
Dont you think that Doepfer has already malk this cow to dust?
No one cares that you don’t like it. Literally no one.
Says the guy that didn’t notice that half the comments on this post are critical of Behringer.
Isn’t it ironic?
Incorrect. They are different circuits. The Doepfer sounds much better (to me) being far dirtier and cruder sonically. It drives fantastically. The Behringer is identical to the one on their wasp mono, which is a nice filter but much more ‘polite’
yawn, another day and other donut.
Just get the Doepfer one. It is good. And won’t taint your moral standing.
I have it already duder
Ah, so you are just one of those “noooooooooo….. they just released a clone of my brand version, now im stuck with it …as no person with sense would pay the price close to my Doepfer edition after this release”…..that speaks for itself…
Or maybe he’s one of those musicians that can afford decent gear, and doesn’t have to settle for a Behringer knockoff that’s built with the cheapest pots, and jacks that aren’t fixed to the panel.
I’m not knocking you or anybody else for being on a tight budget, and Behringer makes good options for those of us that are.
But when you mock musicians that like good gear that’s already very affordable, Andreas, you’re being the type of snob that you think you’re criticizing.
I don’t know, if you are aware of this, but most pure analog eurorack gear consist of a pcb with a few components. Most of those components comes from the same Place.
So claim something as decent/quality, just because the Company charge more per component is ignorant, so please spare me from the “snob feedback” as this mirrors back at you.
Your comment confirms that you can’t refute the facts that I’ve stated, Andreas, and that you’re choosing to make snobby comments, instead.
Also – your “I know you are but what am I?” response might have worked in kindergarten, Andreas, but it’s kind of laughable among adults.
Not it does not, that you dont want realize the reality of what your are paying for, this is your own fault.
I can recommend you to check out “I’m Espen Kraft and you’re not” Youtube channel, because is it seems like you missed a spot of your shirt after last feasting.
You continue to make excuses and deflect for your inability to support your statements.
You’re attacking people, calling them snobs, and then when somebody calls you on it, you got nothing.
Kraft’s videos have gone off the deep end in the last few months. He seems to be chasing fake controversies that he doesn’t seem to have any real knowledge of.
If you’re relying on Kraft’s videos to support your opinion, you’re not even taking yourself seriously.
Hahaha Espen Kraft, rally?!
How to loose an argument in 2 words!
I have gear by B. It’s fine.
Are the pots, jacks etc worse quality than on other brands? Yes, definitely.
Why are you being so argumentative?
The statement the Doepfer one will be better quality is one of fact. It will be better quality. That’s why it costs, slightly, more.
Define morality for me.
When you switch between windows 10 and 11 which version do you prefer ?
If it has to be defined to you, you don’t have any.
How many people have you help kill by being a good citizen who pays their taxes? I feel like you are the immoral one – just sayin cause you don’t want to define morality. You just want to feel righteous about a cloned filter which is just a cloned filter of another.
You’re very brave with your assumptions. Or is it naivety?
Firstly, I’ve helped kill numerous people with my service in the armed forces.
Secondly, there’s no righteous feelings from me on this. I own their Maths clone and their MI Braids clone.
The only person who wants to feel righteous is you. However all you’re being is pious.
As for the definition of morality, well that’s a whole freaking book worth of writing right there. Besides, the definition will change from person to person. Hence my original comment.
If you have to ask, you probably don’t have any.
Nope, I don’t feel righteous or pious. I feel like a dawless jammer. 🙂
You probally did service in the Israel Defense Forces
i would die of bad moral getting the Doepfer one after what they said about Sudan
I have the Doepfer one, so if I get this one will that balance out the morality from +1 to 0?
… i´ll buy the Doepfer.. Sorry Behringer.
The virtue signaling here is so laughable, wait till’ they learn how these materials are mined lol. Thanks god this is just a $49 filter thou, imagine if this was a real world issue lol.
pitty that the time between tis introduction and the time between you can buy it is months…
Remember, Doepfer are allowed to release cloned filters in Eurorack, but Behringer aren’t!
It’s strange they chose to copy literally one of the cheapest Eurorack modules ever though. I stopped using mine after it (literally) blew one of the chips in half, which they are known to do from time to time. I wonder if Behringer have been kind enough to provide socketed ICs for when this inevitably happens, or they soldered them to the board to save on costs?
They’re aren’t socketed sadly. The standalone wasp synth doesn’t seem to blow chips (yet) the same way the 124 does* but sadly it doesn’t sound anywhere near are ‘rowdy’ and ‘brash’
* I’ve had 2 different a-124’s : excellent filters with bags of character. The chip blowing is a real issue though. One lasted over two years with no faults and then would blow a chip weekly (not just the CMOS either but op-amps too) after repairing it 8 times it finally emitted a audible pop and magic smoke during recording and never functioned again despite changing all of each of the 3 different IC’s and all of the electrolytic capacitors on the advice of Dieter doepfer.
I have no serious electrical engineering knowledge beyond basic synth DIY to support this but I am convinced that heavy feedback processing through the A-124 particularly using the Bandpass out alongside the LP-HP shortens the chip life significantly – however this may be just dumb luck.
It’s available at andertons now.
Mine came today.
Doepfer is already so cheap, why would anyone want this?
it’s 1/2 the price.
Is it me, or does the slogan “your oscillator’s about to feel a sting in it’s tail” not make sense?
I think the phrase “sting in its tail” is about a scorpion, i.e. a painful thing inflicted at the end of something. So the sting is inflicted by the tail, not inflicted to the tail. It’s not about a dog whose tail gets stung by a wasp. That’s not something people ever talk about. Is it?
who says you can’t be inflicted by a tail to the tail?
They mean that the signal from an oscillator, which typically next goes through a filter (which is not always the case with modular but is with hardwired synths) is getting stung by the Wasp filter. The tail/end of the signal coming from the oscillator is getting stung when used with the Wasp filter.
I know, but the idiom “sting in its tail” is a scorpion metaphor, it is the tail that does the stinging, it is not the tail that is stung. So it doesn’t apply in this case.
I don’t think the other way round is a realistic metaphor. I don’t think anyone is worried that their dog’s tail specifically will be stung by a wasp.
I think what it’s actually saying is the oscillator is going to feel “Having a sting in it’s tail” as if it’s been weaponized.
Not that it’s been the target of a sting, that is now has the -Ability- to sting.
Going to have a “stinger” in it’s tail probably makes more sense but doesn’t roll of the tongue quite as well I think.
I agree that would make total sense if they had said “have a sting” but instead they said “feel a sting”.
Where do you think a wasp’s sting is?
It’s on its arse. Or one could say it’s tail.
I’ve never heard the saying in relation to scorpions, maybe because I don’t live in a country with them. I have heard it in relation to wasps, bees and hornets though.
Agreed. So the filter (Wasp) has a sting in its tail. I’d be happy with “The filter with a sting in its tail”.
But TimS and Behringer said that the oscillator has a tail. That’s the metaphor I don’t understand. Do they both have tails, and one tail is stinging the other?
Seems like between 12 and 13 is a forum snoop operating at the foot of Dragon Mountain…who know…between Nansa and Zhuhai
Well ahead of ya
Oh my God, another behringer knock off! Oh my God I have to let everyone know how much this bothers me because everyone wants to know how I feel about products.
No.
One.
Cares
How
You
Feel.
seems like you care, otherwise you wouldn’t have read these comments and responded with your own feelings
I’m indifferent, really. But there’s this one guy—without fail—who logs onto this site just to rage about Behringer, as if his furious keyboard strokes will single-handedly reshape the synth industry. Every. Single. Time. The dedication is almost admirable… if it weren’t so tragically pointless. Honestly, I feel for the poor soul running Synthtopia—does he really need to wade through this nonsense daily?
Oh, you know who you are:) And i must add, you ARE hilarious.
my fav is the endless parade of wife beaters, dog kickers, and caniibals crying over their little world changing. it’s not like there was a corrupt election and an entire nation was thrown under the fascism bus or anything important like that.
