Remember Frankenstein, Edgar Winter‘s iconic monster-synth jam from 1973?
The bad boy is still rocking it – and he made a visit to the Dallas House of Blues Music Hall stage to prove it.
According to the Dallas Morning News, “It was a monstrous tour de force. That may sound like a cliché, but it was true.”
Here’s what they had to say about Winter’s current take on Frankenstein:
The Beaumont native strapped keyboards around his neck and let his synthesizer wail. Then the drums pounded. Pretty soon the guitar was screaming and the bass was thumping. Before it ended, Mr. Winter had done a drum duel and played his trusty saxophone midway through the tune.
At 61, Edgar Winter, still sporting his long white hair and beard on his albino skin, remains a marvel to watch.
The cosmic sound effects, a signature aspect of the influential instrumental rock staple, led us back to the stomping groove characterizing the enduring 1973 hit.
I’ve never had a chance to see Winter live, but this classic clip of Winter doing Frankenstein tells me he’s not to be missed, if the chance ever comes up:
Interesting factoid: the title Frankenstein has nothing to do with the electronic sounds used in the song – but comes from the fact that song was originally close to ten minutes long, and had to be pieced together from many different sections of recording tape to make it short enough to be released as the b-side to Hangin’ Around.

Bad ass, if you ask me.
Definitely bad ass. Nothing like Winter with his 2600 wailing. I was just watching the video with my kids and the word out of their mouths was “Whoa!”
Out of the mouth of babes….nuff said! 🙂
holy shit! that was insane, what a great discovery (i made, thanks to u).
It’s too bad that synth solos like that are out of style!
Anybody knows what synth he used for the original record?
>>It's too bad that synth solos like that are out of style!
Not hardly. Only those that assume and promulgate it are out of style.
