Novation Bass Station II Demo From Messe13

Here’s another look at the new Novation Bass Station II, via sonicstate, that focuses on getting a preview of the variety of sounds the new synth can make.

Based on the classic Novation Bass Station from 20 years ago, the Bass Station II has been ‘completely re-worked for the 21st Century,’ with two filters, two oscillators plus a sub-oscillator, patch save and a fully-analogue effects section.

Plus the Bass Station II boasts a step-sequencer, an arpeggiator, a two octave (25-note) velocity-sensitive keyboard with full-sized keys and a powerful modulation section. There’s also MIDI I/O and USB connectivity.

And the street price is a cool $500.

  1. cranking the distortion up on every sound is the analog equivalent of drenching factory presets in FX. tough to judge the filter without a cleaner listen

  2. Ah well, give me one basstation 2,the three korg volcas,a king korg, pulse 2,rocket,moog subphatty, prophet 12,the nord lead 4,the mfb synth, the ms 20,and give me a roland for backing up this hardware inferno of 2013!

  3. Hopefully this takes off and drives the price of my OG bass station through the roof. I’m sorry, but this new one sounds like shit! I’m hoping its just that awful overdrive. I like the addition of a sequencer, but is the new one hybrid, digital, analogue? I’m sure its a blast to play with, but me rikey ms10 more better.

  4. What an annoying Focusrite person… It’d have been better letting sonic GOD Mr. Batt review this synth. He would have analised the thing in no time and would have given us all the interesting bits there are to know. But this long-clawed (yuk!) Focusrite person was 1: nervous and NOT able to demonstrate this machine confidently of knowledgeable and 2: he was obviously NOT one of the developers.
And please… cut your nails. My stomach turned watching this.
Still… if it is as good as the original Bassstation but with extras, then this is certainly a good move for Novation. Let’s hope all the manufacturers are now going to follow in the Korg and Novation’s footsteps and redo their calssics.

    1. Thanks for the head’s up – poor review plus long-nailed reviewer = me definitely not wanting to watch this video. Barf.

  5. God, what an awful demo! Seriously, how do some of these peeps get these gigs? I’m saying this because I could do a much better job. I really like how he side tracked as quick as possible when Nick asked if the lfo’s were syncable.

  6. I own a classic Basstation which I love very much, great sound, so I look out for the new one. It is unfortunately a very bad demo, this person is not capable of showing the possibilities of this synth..

  7. sounded weak, tinny, digital, noisy, rubbish, awful, nasty, cheap and vile

won’t be buying ever, unless they fix that basic sound which just sucks ASS!

  8. i think they should review the word BASS, and try BASS LEAD STATION. its was a 303 emulation and the 303 never really propped up the bottom, and the expectations of the bottom end nowadays is %100 beef.

  9. Glad to see novation going back to making synths instead of cheap controllers and ipad apps. I hope the trend continues! The demo is not great – clearly they are still working out some kinks, and we need to see the ‘clean’ side of the synth. A 303 emulation demo would be much appreciated!
With regards to the ‘no LFO sync’ comment, I expect this comment was either misinformed or this just hasn’t been implemented in the firmware yet. If all the timing is digitally controlled as mentioned in a previous video, this should be a software kink to work out, not a hardware limitation.
I hope the trend keeps up! Personally, I’d like to see a knobby, desktop supernova 3 some time soon!

  10. Just had a look to other demo’s on youtube from this synth, that guy really knows how to make the most awful sounds. One demo I started laughing with tears when he played the bass station 2.Is this synth/prototype broken or …?WTF.

  11. The guy didn’t know anything about basic synthesis. When asked to demo the raw waveforms, he kept the filter closed, envelope wonky, and the distortion up…. It’s probably a cool synth tho.
