Sacred Bones records has released the ‘lost’ Mort Garson soundtrack to a 1974 ‘blaxploitation’ movie, Black Eye.
Garson is best known for his ’70s Moog albums, like the cult classic Plantasia. But his work ranged from arrangement work for everybody from Doris Day to Mel Torme; songwriting classics like Our Day Will Come; to Moogsploitation music like The Zodiac – Cosmic Sounds.
Black Eye stars Fred Williamson as Stone, an LA private eye. After a movie star’s funeral, the star’s signature walking cane disappears and Stone discovers that it is somehow connected to a string of murders. His investigation takes him onto a porn movie set and leads to a religious cult.
The score may be more memorable than the film. Here’s what Sacred Bones has to say about the soundtrack:
“The soundtrack to Black Eye shows yet again another fascinating side to Garson’s remarkable talent as a composer. Heavily influenced by soul, funk, and jazz, Garson cleverly fuses dynamic brass sections and funky basslines with synthesizers, resulting in unconventional sound textures that blend the classic blaxploitation soundtrack tones with electronic elements and experimental sounds.”
